Our Mission

At "FCS", our primary goal is to build big picture strategies, identify opportunities for public private partnerships, bring diverse parties together (including policy makers, philanthropists, social impact investors, academics, NGO’s and farmers and ranchers) and coalesce capital, public policy and research towards food systems solutions.

We strive to drive more innovative and catalytic solutions towards shifting the food system, to improve health outcomes, reduce chronic preventable diseases, address the climate emergency, revitalize regional economies, and accelerate equitable access to nutritious food, while putting farmers, ranchers and food chain workers at the center of those solutions.

Debbie Friedman, Founder of FCS, has a unique understanding of food and "ag" policy, and what is required to create long term systems change. She is a strategist and coalition builder and also has a track record of working with researchers and healthcare providers – to create unique collaborations, networks and frameworks aligned towards a vision of a healthier and more equitable food system.

Debbie Friedman

Founder, Food | Climate | Strategies

Debbie Friedman, Founder of FCS, has served in a variety of advocacy, communications and leadership positions including as producer for a national environmental radio program, and as a communications consultant for innovative nonprofits & businesses. She co-founded and led two environmental health nonprofits and most recently, served as Program Director for Conscious Kitchen, a fresh, local, organic school food program. Debbie began her career as a practicing attorney in San Francisco.

In her role at Conscious Kitchen, Debbie led strategic planning, policy, and research initiatives, and supported and engaged partnerships with school districts and community stakeholders in the school food sector across the Bay Area, and beyond. She was a frequent speaker at conferences and convenings and supported all administrative aspects of the program including fundraising. As Co-Founder and Director of Moms Advocating Sustainability, Debbie led policy initiatives and organized coalitions, with an emphasis on shifting agricultural policies towards ecologically-oriented practices, to reduce the amounts of pesticides sprayed by state and local agencies. She was also a frequent speaker at community events and in policy related settings, expanded the organization to include Napa County and Orange County branches, led local and national PR and media efforts, and testified before the California Senate. 

 

Prior to joining Conscious Kitchen's team as Program Director, she co-founded and served as Executive Director of GMOScience, a science-based educational and information platform that addresses the costs, risks and benefits of genetically engineered food. Through this work, she identified and organized a network of doctors and scientists to publish original scientific analysis of peer reviewed articles and clinical research, and conceived and organized an international Inaugural Summit attended by scientists, healthcare providers, farmers, academics and others at the historic Paicines Ranch. She remains an advisor to these three organizations. Debbie was selected in 2011 as a “Marin Hero for Children,” by Marin Advocates for Children.
